AI Website Portability Checklist Before You Migrate

AI website builders are excellent at producing a convincing first version of a site. The problem starts after the demo: someone needs to own the content, publish new pages, manage redirects, add plugins, collect leads, and keep search rankings stable. AI Website Portability Checklist Before You Migrate is about moving from a generated website into a durable WordPress operating model without discarding the work the AI builder already did. The goal is not to make every site “more WordPress-like” at the expense of design. The goal is to keep the design, preserve the useful JavaScript, and replace builder lock-in with portable templates, editable content, and standard hosting. That is why the process starts with a free preview: the WordPress output must prove itself before any download payment happens.

The cleanest source is the one closest to the original project root: a GitHub repository, a full ZIP, or a static export with all assets included. A single copied HTML file is rarely enough. Keep package files, public assets, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, and route definitions. Remove node_modules, caches, and private .env files. Confirm ownership of source, media, fonts, copy, domain, analytics, email sending, payment accounts, and every public route. A reliable conversion depends on boring completeness: every linked image exists, every route has a URL, every stylesheet is referenced, and every script required for navigation ships with the export. If those basics are right, the WordPress theme has a strong foundation.

The preview is the quality gate. Check the homepage first, then inner pages, mobile navigation, footer links, forms, sliders, image galleries, and any animation that controls content visibility. If an image is missing, trace whether it came from an imported asset, a public folder, a remote CDN, or a CSS background. If a route is blank, confirm it was reachable as a real URL in the source project. Do not patch the final ZIP by hand as your primary workflow. Fix the source or rerun the conversion with a more complete export. That keeps future conversions repeatable and prevents one-off theme edits from becoming the new source of truth.

After installing the theme, configure permalinks, caching, an SEO plugin, sitemap submission, redirects, and analytics. Preserve titles and descriptions during launch, then improve them gradually after traffic stabilizes. Moving to WordPress is not a license to rewrite every page at once; that creates unnecessary ranking volatility. Portability means you can move hosts, edit content, export posts, and rebuild the design without losing the business. Store theme ZIPs, source exports, media, and redirect maps in a shared workspace. That operational discipline is what turns a converted AI website into a long-term asset.

Before DNS cutover, confirm the WordPress preview matches the original, the theme installs on staging, menus resolve, forms send, SEO titles are present, canonical URLs self-reference, sitemap.xml lists the new pages, and payment/download flows are restricted to the right user. After launch, monitor Search Console, crawl errors, form submissions, and performance for at least a week. The safest conversion is deliberately staged: export, preview, repair, pay, download, install on staging, QA, redirect, publish. Skipping steps feels faster until a missing asset or broken canonical costs you traffic.
