Visual Guide: What Exporting From Webflow Actually Gets You

This section includes step-by-step visual guidance for optimal results.

Webflow gives you three separable artifacts. The first is a static ZIP containing HTML, CSS, JS, images, and fonts — the visual output of your site at the moment of export. The second is CMS collection data, exported as CSV files, one per collection. The third is a full site backup, which is Webflow-internal and only useful for restoring inside Webflow. For any migration — to WordPress, to another static host, to a custom stack — you need the first two and can ignore the third.

2
Enabling Code Export on Your Site

Open Project Settings from the site's Designer, go to the Export tab, and confirm that code export is available. If it says the feature requires an upgrade, upgrade the site plan (or ask the workspace owner to). Once available, click Export Code to trigger the download. The ZIP typically arrives within 30 seconds for a small site and up to a couple of minutes for larger sites.

Pro Tip

Use your platform’s official export or download option and upload that ZIP directly. Keep all files together in one complete archive.

3
Exporting CMS Collections

For each CMS collection your site uses, open the collection in the Designer, click Settings, and export the collection as CSV. Repeat for every collection. Save the CSVs in a folder next to your static ZIP — you'll re-import them into your destination platform's CMS after migration. Categories, tags, and reference fields are preserved as columns; multi-reference fields are comma-separated inside a cell.

4
Inspecting the Exported ZIP

Unzip and you'll see a folder structure that mirrors your Webflow pages: `index.html` for the homepage, one HTML file per static page, a `css/` folder with the compiled stylesheet, a `js/` folder with the interactions bundle, `images/` for all uploaded images, `fonts/` for custom fonts. Every internal link is relative, so the site works when opened as a folder or served from any static host without additional configuration.

5
Migrating the Static ZIP to WordPress

For WordPress migrations, drop the ZIP into the AI to Wordpress uploader. The static-html pipeline detects the Webflow output structure, extracts the shared header and footer into `header.php` and `footer.php`, generates a `page.php` template per HTML file, packages the CSS and JS into the theme, and mirrors images and fonts into the theme's assets directory. Total time: under two minutes for most sites.

Security Note

Every file you upload is automatically scanned for malware before processing. Unsafe files are rejected immediately to protect your WordPress installation.

6
Bringing CMS Content Into WordPress

For each Webflow CMS collection, use WP All Import (or the built-in Tools → Import → CSV) to bring the CSV into a matching WordPress custom post type. Field mapping is manual the first time and takes about ten minutes per collection. Once mapped, re-imports (for subsequent Webflow exports) are one-click. Blog posts typically map to the built-in Posts CPT; other collections map to newly-created custom post types.

7
Rewiring Forms After Export

Exported forms have no submission endpoint. In WordPress, install Contact Form 7 or WPForms, create a form that matches your exported markup, and replace the exported form's `<form>` tag with the plugin's shortcode. Alternatively, keep the exported HTML and point its `action` attribute at admin-ajax.php or a REST endpoint you register in a mu-plugin. Both approaches take under an hour for a typical site with two or three forms.

8
Hosting the Export as a Static Site (Non-WordPress Path)

If you don't want WordPress, the exported ZIP is deployable to any static host: Netlify, Vercel, Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, a $2 shared hosting account. Just upload and point DNS. Static hosting is cheap and fast but leaves you without a CMS — for editorial teams that matters, which is often why the WordPress route is more common.

Performance Tip

Minified CSS and JavaScript files convert more efficiently and produce cleaner WordPress themes. Use your builder's production export option.

9
Keeping Exports Reproducible

Export whenever the design has meaningfully changed. Store each export in a dated folder so you can compare versions if a bug appears after re-migration. If you're on a serious cadence (weekly exports), automate: Webflow has a Data API that can trigger exports programmatically, and CI can drop the resulting ZIP into your migration pipeline. Most teams don't need this level of automation, but it's available if the scale demands it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Webflow plan do I need to export code?
Code export requires at least a paid Site Plan or a Workspace plan that includes the export feature. Free workspaces can preview projects but not download the static ZIP. Check Webflow's current pricing; the export feature is grouped with paid tiers because it's the primary way to leave the platform.
What does the Webflow code export include?
Static HTML for every page, compiled CSS (one big stylesheet), compiled JavaScript, images, fonts, and any assets you uploaded. It does not include CMS collection data — that comes out separately as CSVs. The static export is essentially a snapshot of your site at export time, suitable for hosting on any static host or converting to WordPress.
Does the export contain CMS content?
Only the pages that were rendered at export time. Dynamic CMS collections come out separately: go to each CMS collection settings and click Export CSV. Combine both the static HTML and the CSVs when migrating so both the design and the content move together.
Are Webflow interactions and animations preserved in the export?
Yes. Webflow's interactions compile to a JavaScript file that ships alongside the HTML. Hover states, scroll animations, click interactions, and lottie files all continue working after export because the compiled JS carries the behaviour.
Are forms functional after export?
Not automatically. Webflow's form handler lives on Webflow's servers; exported HTML forms have no submission endpoint. You wire them to a new handler after export (Formspree, Netlify Forms, a WordPress plugin like Contact Form 7). This is a five-minute change per form.
Do e-commerce (Webflow Ecommerce) pages export usefully?
The design of storefront pages exports, but the cart, checkout, and order management run on Webflow's servers and don't come with the export. For real commerce migrations, plan to rebuild the transactional side on WooCommerce, Shopify, or another platform, using the exported HTML as the visual foundation.
Can I edit exported Webflow code by hand?
Yes, but the code is minified and machine-generated, so it's not fun to hand-edit at scale. For small tweaks (swap a URL, add a script tag) it's fine. For structural changes, edit in Webflow and re-export — that's how the tool is designed to be used.
Does exporting my Webflow site cancel my subscription?
No. Export is a download, not a cancellation. Your Webflow site continues to be hosted and editable as long as you keep paying. The export is a snapshot you can use elsewhere without affecting the source.
